The automatic analyser, Carlo Erba 1106, is the hard-working instrument used for all the C, H, N determinations; its minimum sample requirement is 1 mg (0.6 mg. for the analysis and the rest to stick to the sample tube walls).
The sample is combusted, and the gases, after scrubbing and reducing, are separated on a g.c. column and measured at the detector. Liquid samples are analysed using a special sealing device designed to hermetically seal the container.
