After graduating from Monash University, Darren worked at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) before gaining an Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering Research Fellowship in the RSC.
His time is divided between the Research School of Physics and Engineering, where he work with the Centre for Teaching and Learning in the Physical Sciences and convenes and lectures PHYS3032: Condensed Matter Physics, and the Research School of Chemistry.
His field of research is materials science, with an emphasis on using diffraction techniques (X-ray, neutron, electron) to study structural properties of materials.
Much of the work is done at national facilities such as the OPAL reactor at ANSTO (Sydney), the Australian Synchrotron (Melbourne), the Advanced Photon Source (Chicago) and the ISIS neutron source (Oxford).
