The ANU is fortunate indeed to have an outstanding teacher as the first year convenor and course coordinator for both Chemistry 1 and 2, Dr Mark Ellison. Mark is a highly innovative lecturer, a former secondary school teacher and science head teacher who aptly completed his PhD on how we teach chemistry.
The success of first year chemistry at the ANU particularly over the last 3-4 years is in no small part due to the remarkable talents and commitment of its convenor. During the period of his convenor-ship he has established a very successful small group tutorial program (to supplement the significantly larger formal tutorials in the two courses); a series of basics lectures for students that don't have the appropriate background in the various topics covered in lectures; and an enviably successful peer mentoring tutorial program. Other key staff involved in the teaching of first year chemistry in 2011 are Professor Rob Stranger, newly appointed post doc teaching fellows Dr Andy Lawrence and Dr Tom Fallon, four PhD teaching fellows Karen Deane, Luke Pasfield, Annie ColeBatch and Anya Gryn'ova plus a dozen or so highly talented undergraduate students undertaking the peer mentoring roles.
