Unlike first year chemistry that has a dedicated convenor position, the structure at the third year is somewhat different. Each of the courses offered at these higher levels has an individual course coordinator. There is a convenor at the third year level that oversees the operation but they are not dedicated positions.
A key feature of the third year chemistry course is that many of the staff involved in the courses are outstanding researchers in their own right and are leaders of sizeable research operations. This is a major benefit of studying undergraduate chemistry at the ANU.
Students undertaking third year chemistry at the ANU have great flexibility in terms of their course options; are taught by dedicated educationalists, many of who are outstanding researchers in their own right; and have the opportunity to undertake an individual project in one of the many cutting-edge research programs being conducted within the RSC. The latter provides an ideal platform for students contemplating undertaking Honours in chemistry.
Twelve 3 unit courses are offered in third year chemistry, eight of which are lecture based and the remainder are stand-alone laboratory based courses. A single 6 unit course (Research Project in Chemistry) is also offered in both Semesters 1 & 2. A Major in chemistry requires completion of 18 units of these courses with a minimum of 6 and no more than 12 units being lab (or project) based courses. A double Major in chemistry requires completion of a further 18 units of these courses.
The Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) prize is awarded to the top student in third year chemistry each year.
Third Year Convener: Associate Professor Geoff Salem
[Note this is not a dedicated position like that of the First Year Chemistry Convenor]
