Rob Stranger graduated and received his PhD from the University of Tasmania.
He has since held positions at the Tasmanian Education Department, the Research School of Chemistry (ANU, 1987-1989), the University of Queensland (1989-1994) before been appointed Lecturer at the ANU.
He has been awarded a Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarship (1985) and the Australia-China Special Fund Grant (2008).
He was promoted to Professor at the Research School of Chemistry (2001).
