The basic human requirement for a high quality of life is good health. Diagnostic tests and procedures are essential tools in the armoury of the physician in order to achieve this aim, with current diagnoses being based on measuring a panel of biological or chemical parameters in readily accessible biological fluids such as blood or urine. Modern technology is developing to allow the physician to make measurements of key analyses on or near the patient (point-of-care testing) or in real-time. This lecture will review some of these developments in sensor technologies and how these are being linked into mobile phones and thenceforth into mobile healthcare (mHealth) strategies.
