Carboxylesterases

Carboxylesterases are known to confer insecticide resistance to insects, such as the Australian sheep blowfly. We have solved the first crystal structure of one of these enzymes. By capturing a crystallographic 'snapshot' of the enzyme in the process of hydrolysing and detoxifying the pesticide we have been able to study this reaction in detail, which could lead to the development of new pesticides and treatment of people poisoned by pesticides.
