Mechanism of the Month July

According to the aufbau principle, the unpaired electron of a free radical should occupy the highest-energy orbital. However, Anya Gryn'ova from the Coote group has discovered distonic radical anions that not only violate this principle but have exceptionally high radical stability that can be conveniently manipulated by pH (Nature Chem. 2013, 5, 474). These unusual species are likely to have practical applications in molecular electronics and organic and polymer synthesis, and may even be relevant in enzyme catalysis.
