Paramagnetic metal ions, in particular lanthanides, elicit large effects in NMR spectra. They are easy to measure and we are using these effects to determine the 3D structure of proteins and protein assemblies in solution under near physiological conditions, aiming to do this much faster than what is possible with conventional NMR techniques.
