2019 Craig Lecture - Professor Mark Lautens - “No Strain, No Gain? Lessons in Catalysis”

We have had a fascination with strained ring molecules, both as rigid substrates for controlling stereochemistry in asymmetric ring opening (ARO)1-3 reactions, and as promoters for C-H functionalization reactions (Catellani reaction)4-6. This lecture will provide a historical overview of those reactions followed by recent advances that highlight the broad scope and applicability of these transformations.
