International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia

IDAHOBIT is an internationally recognised and supported day of significance that aims to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ people internationally.

The date of May 17 was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. In under a decade, May 17 has established itself as the single most important date for LGBTIQ communities to mobilise on a worldwide scale. May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal, with 1600 events reported from 1280 organisations in 2014. These mobilisations unite millions of people in support of the recognition of human rights for all, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

The 2018 International IDAHOBIT theme is: “Alliances for Solidarity”. According to the International IDAHOBIT website. “No battle can be won in isolation. We all need to keep strengthening alliances, especially to ensure safety, fight violence, lobby for legal change, and/or campaign to change hearts and minds. Reach out to our current partners to reinforce our bond, reach out to new partners to raise awareness of our commonalities, and engage in collective action around the day.”
