Capacitive (hybrid) energy storage: sodium-ion and potassium-ion capacitors

Lithium-ion batteries are dominant in electric vehicles, energy-efficient power grids and home storage. Consequently, lithium price is rising dramatically; there may not be enough economical reserves in the long term. Lithium global reserves are limited and geographically localised in a small number of countries. Non-lithium sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries have attracted attention in an attempt to create batteries based on sustainable chemical elements. It is of a critical importance to identify negative and positive electrode material that may enable such batteries and provide storage performance comparable with lithium-ion batteries.

This project aims to investigate the promise and performance of various candidate materials for negative and positive electrodes in high voltage sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries. Demonstration of successful full cell batteries is further anticipated in this PhD project. Collaborations with researchers in Europe, Russia and Japan and research exchanges are expected to be a part of the project.
