Development of new paradigms for the uniform electron gases

The standard model of the uniform electron gas consists of an infinite number of electrons, occupying a box of infinite volume, but with a constant electron density at all points.  However, we have recently shown that, by placing electrons on imaginary spheres, one can construct perfectly uniform electron gases that contain only a *finite* number of electrons.  We have also shown that the properties of these finite electron gases are significantly different from those of the corresponding infinite gases and are a superior model for the electron densities in molecules.
