About

The ANU Battery Lab conducts research on advanced batteries, electrochemical energy storage and functional materials. Our research spans all-solid-state batteries, lithium-ion batteries, aqueous batteries, Li metal batteries and other emerging rechargeable battery systems.

We are particularly interested in understanding the relationships between materials chemistry, structure, interfaces, charge transport and electrochemical performance, and in using this understanding to develop safer, higher-energy, longer-lasting and more sustainable energy-storage technologies.

Our research combines materials design and synthesis, electrochemistry, battery engineering, and advanced characterisation.

Key research areas include:

  • All-solid-state batteries and solid electrolytes
  • Lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries
  • Aqueous and other safe energy-storage systems
  • Lithium–sulfur, lithium–selenium and other conversion-type batteries
  • Electrode, electrolyte and interfacial materials
  • Battery reaction mechanisms, transport and degradation
  • Advanced electrochemical, spectroscopic and structural characterisation

Our current research focuses on:

  • Designing advanced electrode materials, including layered oxides, polyanionic compounds and other high-energy battery chemistries;
  • Developing solid electrolytes and interfacial materials for next-generation solid-state batteries;
  • Exploring functional battery materials based on critical and high-value mineral resources relevant to Australia;
  • Understanding composition–structure–property relationships, interfacial reactions and charge transport in rechargeable batteries.

Projects

Exploring advanced electrode, solid-electrolyte and interfacial materials for all-solid-state lithium batteries, to improve energy density, safety and lifetime for next-generation energy storage.
