Chemistry Ambassador program

The ANU Joint Colleges of Science are offering up to 10 chemistry undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake a two week immersive program in chemistry at the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.

This is a pioneer program designed to foster increased communication between the ANU and the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities, and will include a full range of academic and social activities for successful participants.  The academic program will include lab sessions, workshops and seminars at both the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University.  Indicative assessment includes a lab notebook, a reflection on experience and a presentation.

Prior to the program, all students will be provided with a pre-departure briefing by the Research School of Chemistry to prepare them for the experience.

The city of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, has a rich history centred around a number of iconic landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace and Arthur’s Seat, as well as famous tourist precincts such as the Royal Mile and Princes Street. The city is also host to the yearly international Edinburgh Festival which encompasses a myriad of cultural and artistic events.

About Heriot-Watt University

The main campus of Heriot-Watt University is located a short distance to the west of the Edinburgh city centre on 380 acres of scenic parkland. The university was established in 1821 as the world’s first ‘Mechanics Institute’ and has a proud history of gender diversity several decades before this was mandatory. The university also has two international campuses in Dubai and Malaysia, as well as additional Scottish campuses in Orkney and Galashiels.

About Edinburgh University

The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582, is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's ancient universities. The university is deeply embedded in the fabric of the city of Edinburgh, with many of the buildings in the historic Old Town belonging to the university.

Funding and fees

The program is restricted to first year students and selected second year students who have taken CHEM1101 and CHEM1201 or equivalent and will be undertaking further second or third year courses in chemistry at the ANU.

All accepted students will receive a AUD $1,500 grant from the ANU Joint Colleges of Science to contribute to your experience, and could cover a range of costs including travel to and from and within Scotland, meals and living expenses.  Accommodation will be booked and paid for by the Research School of Chemistry. Students will be required to provide a $500 co-contribution, via invoice prior to the course start date.

Students will enrol and pay fees for a six unit 1000-level science ANU elective course (students must have room in their degree for a 1000-level Science course). Students will not pay further fees to the University of Edinburgh or Heriot-Watt University.

Australian citizens, permanent humanitarian visa holders and New Zealand Special Category Visa holders who meet the long-term residency requirements are eligible to be considered for an OS-HELP loan which can assist with the financing of this global opportunity. For this opportunity, eligible ANU students can borrow up to AUD $7,764. Students can access further information at the ANU OS-HELP webpage.


Participants will receive ANU insurance coverage for the duration of the program in Edinburgh, including travel time to and from Australia.  Travel insurance for travel time outside of the program travel dates is the responsibility of the student.


Applications for the 2020 Chemistry Ambassador Program will close on the 30th June 2019.

Dates for the 2020 Chemistry Ambassador Program will be Monday 13th January - Friday 24th January, with successful participants expected to arrive on Sunday 12th January and depart Saturday 25th January.
