Scientists have harnessed static electricity to control chemical reactions for the first time, in a breakthrough that could bring cleaner industry and cheaper nanotechnology.
The team used an electric field as a catalyst for a common reaction, the Diels-Alder reaction, improving its reaction rate by a factor of five.

As the push to increase renewable energy sources intensifies, ANU researchers are at the forefront of new innovations, as TEGAN KAHN, BMedSc (Hons) '09, reports.
 
Solar panels adorn the rooftops of more than one million Australian homes and the industry is booming. Yet most commercial solar cells are often relatively inefficient.
 
Many solar panels only convert up to 15 per cent of the sunlight received into electricity but ANU scientists are working on improving this rate.

Radialenes are a unique class of star-shaped cyclic hydrocarbons that have double bonds radiating out from each carbon in the ring. The Mander Best PhD Thesis in Organic Chemistry Award recognizes the best PhD thesis submitted in the previous two years in the field of organic chemistry. This award is for outstanding achievement and communication in organic chemistry. The recipient will receive a cash prize of $1000, generously provided by Davies Collison Cave.
The recipient of the inaugural Mander Best PhD Thesis Award for 2015 is Dr Christopher Newton.

Two students have won prestigious scholarships to do post graduate studies at ANU.
Alexandra Schumann-Gillett and Tessa Henwood-Mitchell have been named 2016 Westpac Future Leaders Scholarships recipients.
The scholarship will allow Ms Schumann-Gillett, who has been working as a research assistant in the O'Mara group in the ANU Research School of Chemistry, to start her PhD studies in this group in January 2016.
In her PhD Ms Schumann-Gillett will use computer models to look at how "off fats" in brain cells lead to Alzheimer's disease.
