About
Fungicides are essential for protecting crops from devastating fungal diseases. Fungicide resistance is on the rise in many crop growing regions posing a critical challenge to management strategies. Fungicides are classified into various mode-of-action (MOA) groups according to their molecular targets. Repeated application of a single MOA fungicide is the main driver of pathogen evolution to fungicide resistance. This project aims to generate a new fungicide MOA by targeting a key protein involved in fungal pathogenicity, using in silico protein modelling and virtual compound screening. The new MOA will help overcome arising resistance mechanisms and provide a promising avenue for developing environmentally benign compounds. The project will engineer yeast strains with novel biosensors for high-throughput functional screening of transporter proteins. The engineered yeast strains are expected to offer significant potential for drug discovery and bio-manufacturing.
