Congratulations to Professor Mark Humphrey on being awarded the RACI Leighton Memorial Medal

The Leighton Memorial Medal commemorates the distinguished career of A E Leighton. As a staunch supporter of the RACI, Leighton carried out an enormous amount of work to secure the RACI Royal Charter. The Leighton Memorial Medal is the RACI’s most prestigious medal and is awarded in recognition of eminent services to chemistry in Australia in the broadest sense, including research, technology and service to the RACI, public service and national leadership.

Mark Humphrey joined RACI in 1982 when he was a student at the University of Adelaide and became a Fellow of the Institute in 1997. During 22 consecutive years of service to the RACI, he held a number of positions in both the ACT Branch and the Inorganic Division, and served as President of the former and Chair of the latter. He has been particularly active in conference organization, chairing or co-chairing 16 conferences and symposia including RACI Inorganic Division meetings and OZOM conferences.

Mark has been at the ANU since 1994, initially in the Department of Chemistry, and since 2009 in the Research School of Chemistry. In the past few years, he has served on the Australian Research Council’s College of Experts and ERA Research Evaluation Committee. He leads major international research collaborations with France and China and has ca. 310 publications, mostly dealing with organometallic chemistry and/or nonlinear optical materials research. Mark is a recipient of the RACI Organometallic Award (1998), the Inorganic Division Award (Burrows Award) (2008) and the HG Smith Memorial Medal (2010).
