Yet, even in this field, sometimes you have to think big. That is exactly what the new arrival to the Research School of Chemistry, Zongyou Yin is doing.
Zongyou has had an interest in the applications of material science for years now, having travelled to different parts of the world to pursue his scientific passion.

In November the Research School of Chemistry celebrated our 50th Anniversary. 
On Thursday the 16th of November we were very lucky to welcome Professor Christopher Dobson from the University of Cambridge for the Arthur Birch Lecture, who spoke to us about his groundbreaking work in amyloid formation by peptides and proteins.

In the modern scientific environment good research often requires a good communication strategy. But could you condense an entire thesis to only three minutes? This year Research School of Chemistry PhD candidate Bethany McBride managed to achieve that, becoming a finalist in the Three Minute Thesis Competition. While seemingly a step outside of the box that usually makes up her research, Bethany says she learnt a lot of valuable skills from the process.

Last week, the RSC celebrated the great work of its HDR students with a wonderful day of presentations in the Birch Lecture Theatre. A good crowd was on hand to listen to thirteen second-year HDR students who presented their research in an eight-minute format, during which they all talked about the personal motivation for choosing their PhD project. The presentations were uniformly excellent and there was a great vibe during the day, with a lot of interesting questions from the audience.

Congratulations to Dr Paul Carr on his 25 year service award. The 25 year service award celebrates a staff's commitment and contribution to the University.
Paul was awarded along with 27 other ANU staff who are celebrating 25 years of service and one staff member who is celebrating 40 years.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt congratulated all recipients of the 2017 awards.

Congratulations to Liam Burt on being awarded the RACI Masson Memorial Medal. Liam is a Summer Scholar at the RSC.
This Award has been established as a memorial to the late Sir David Orme Masson, Founder of the RACI. The aim of the award is to assist a financial member of the RACI to proceed in further studies in chemistry, either as an Honours year, or in their first postgraduate year of study.

Congratulations to Professor Mark Humphrey on being awarded the RACI Leighton Memorial Medal
The Leighton Memorial Medal commemorates the distinguished career of A E Leighton. As a staunch supporter of the RACI, Leighton carried out an enormous amount of work to secure the RACI Royal Charter. The Leighton Memorial Medal is the RACI’s most prestigious medal and is awarded in recognition of eminent services to chemistry in Australia in the broadest sense, including research, technology and service to the RACI, public service and national leadership.

The RSC was represented at the RACI NSW organic chemistry symposium 2017, 29 November, University of Sydney, by Kelsey Horvath, Nick Magann, Natalie Shadwell and Maddie Sowden. All four gave well-presented posters, with congratulations to Maddie Sowden won a best poster prize (one of 3 winners from over 60 poster presenters), but all four presenters were winners!
