International research led by The Australian National University (ANU) has found how plants, such as rice and wheat, sense and respond to extreme drought stress, in a breakthrough that could lead to the development of next-generation drought-proof crops.
Lead researcher Dr Kai Xun Chan from the ANU Research School of Biology said the team discovered an enzyme that senses adverse drought and sunlight conditions, and how it works from atomic to overall plant levels.

The Craig Celebration Symposium, Lecture and Dinner last Friday were very successful and well attended. We had many attendees from Canberra and interstate. The RSC would like to thank all the presenters for their contributions which provided an ideal mixture of personal recollections, anecdotes and science.
The Craig Family has expressed their sincere thanks to the School for our efforts in celebrating David’s life and his science. Jo Bayley is to be congratulated for her superb organisation of the day’s events. She was ably assisted by Alannah Macleod and Carol Taylor.

Congratulations to Prof. John White and Prof. Denis Evans who have both received major awards in the Queen’s Birthday honours list. The awards are due recognition for their significant academic and scientific contributions to the ANU, Australia and the world.
John was made an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia, and Denis was made an Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Malcolm McLeod who was a recipient of an ARC Linkage grant for $425,000 over 3 years. The project will develop strategies to detect designer steroids in racing greyhounds and will be supplemented by $151,200 cash and $645,000 in kind from the industry partners Greyhounds Australasia, Queensland Government Racing Science Centre, and Racing Analytical Services Limited.

Scientists have harnessed static electricity to control chemical reactions for the first time, in a breakthrough that could bring cleaner industry and cheaper nanotechnology.
The team used an electric field as a catalyst for a common reaction, the Diels-Alder reaction, improving its reaction rate by a factor of five.

On Monday 22nd of February, the Federal Opposition Leader Mr Bill Shorten, along with Senator Kim Carr (Shadow Minister for Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Industry), Ms Amanda Rishworth (Shadow Assistant Minister for Education), and the two local Federal Members of Parliament, Dr Andrew Leigh (Shadow Assistant Treasurer) and Ms Gai Brodtmann visited the Research School of Chemistry. They toured our Biological Chemistry Laboratory and talked to staff and students, before hosting a press conference in the RSC Courtyard.
