Saltman Lecture 2017: Nick Cox 
"High-Field Pulse EPR - A Biophysical Toolbox for the Study of the Oxygen Evolving Complex" 
The 2017 Saltman Lecturer at the Gordon Research Conference on Metals in Biology (MIB) was Dr Nicholas Cox, who gave an exciting talk on new technology for studying one of nature’s key enzymes. The lecture is in honor of Paul Saltman who was one of the founders of the metals in biology Gordon conference. Each year the conference chair selects a promising young scientist for this honor, and the Saltman lecture is a highlight of the conference.

Three ANU postgraduate science students have received a financial boost that will enable them to do further research into their areas of expertise for the next three years. 
The three PhD students have received Westpac Future Leaders Scholarships, which are offered to students who have the potential to make a difference to Australia's future in the areas of technology and innovation, strengthening Australia-Asia ties, and enabling positive social change.

Congratulations to Dr Andrew Gilbert on receiving the 2017 Wormit Award. The Wormit Award was established to recognize excellence in the development of new methods and algorithms in the area of electronic structure and for implementing these methods in state-of-the art computer codes within the Q-Chem open teamware community project.  One award is given each year and includes a certificate and prize of US$500.  It commemorates contributions of Dr.

Congratulations to Professor Michelle Coote on being awarded The HG Smith Medal for 2016. The HG Smith Medal is the premier research award of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and is awarded for “the development of some branch of chemical science; this contribution will be judged by research work published or accepted for publication during the ten years, or equivalent relative to opportunity, immediately preceding the award".

ANU graduate Ellen Cliff has been named the Queensland Rhodes Scholar for 2017 and will head to Oxford in September next year.
Ms Cliff, who graduated in July with a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) in Chemistry and Marine Science, will use her scholarship to complete a PhD in Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford.
"I grew up in Queensland and completed my schooling there so I am both thrilled and honoured to be named the Queensland Rhodes Scholar for 2017," she said.
